3 Simple Things to Check before Scheduling Air Conditioning Repair

No one wants to go through the hassle and the expense of HVAC repair; and if you can solve your problems without outside help, that would be ideal. Experienced homeowners may be able to enact certain repairs like air leaks, but not everyone. Luckily, there are many simpler causes of air conditioner trouble–ones that homeowners should consider before they to resort to scheduling air conditioning repair. We have a few tips that may save you some trouble.

1. Check for Power

The filter itself might not be your problem. You might not be getting power to it, which is a problem that in itself can have multiple causes. One of the most common is a tripped circuit breaker. Try turning the breaker off and on again, which may reset the system. If you have an unlabeled circuit breaker, then you may need a professional to do it for you.

2. Check Your Thermostat

Speaking of power, you might need to change the batteries on your thermostat if you have a digital device. You’ll know that you need new batteries if you don’t see the date or time on the digital readout. Once you’ve made sure the thermostat is on, make sure it’s set correctly. You want your thermostat in the Auto position, set to Cool.

3. Check Your Filter

You may not realize it, but you need to change your filter every month during which you are running your air conditioning unit. A clogged or dirty filter can cause more problems than you realize, besides causing poor air quality for you and your family. If you’re in doubt, it can’t hurt to change your filter and see if your system starts running more effectively. This is a simple piece of maintenance, and it helps keep your unit in better working order. It will also be more energy efficient and will therefore save you money on your air conditioning bills.
